I have 2 snowball trees, both have holes bored into them from some type of large bugs. They actually look kind of like black bumble bees. Some are black and some are yellow/light brown color. Does anyone know what they would be? Are they dangerous? They seem to be killing my 2 trees. I cut one of the thick branches they had several holes and 9 of those bugs flew out at me.

If there is a California Cooperative Extension office operating near you during hours when you are available try taking your information to them and seeing if they know the insect. This is a good idea anyway so they are kept informed of the occurrence of pest insects in the area. Ideally you would trap example(s) of the bugs themselves and take those in.

Thank you! I have found out that they are carpenter bees!
