Hi - am putting new fruit trees into my garden in Vancouver, and wonder what the best prune plum variety is? are there good dwarf varieties of prune plums for this climate? Thanks - Susan
Here's a comprehensive list of prune plum varieties known to do well in the PNW: http://www.hartmannursery.com/Plums.htm Should add that being a WA state source, some of these may or may not be available in B.C....and importing Prunus is always tedious, usually expensive, and sometimes impossible. Many of them should be available up here though.
Susan, I can't get Woodschmoe's list to come up, but I notice it's is in Tacoma WA. Another excellent resource and closer in the WSU Extension Garden on Memorial Highway West of Mt Vernon. They try to find the best fruit trees for this area. From my personal experience the Italian prune/plum can't be beat! Also the Shiro (a yellow early plum) does very well. Even old neglected trees seem to carry on without much help I don't know about dwarf varieties of either but they sure will! barb
