Hello, this plant is growing wild in my garden in Almaty, Kazakhstan. It's a shrub of about 2m tall, and the leaves grow in bunches of 5 together. I checked out the wikipedia and www.plantarium.ru but I can't figure out what it is. It seems to grow quite a lot in the area. We live in a semi-arid zone, hardiness zone 4 or 5. I want to eat it, but am not sure if I can. Any help greatly appreciated!
Not sure yet if it is quinquefolia or vitacea. I am having trouble locating the sticky tips of quinquefolia (don't know where they should be), so I think it is vitacea. Need to have another look first!
Does it climb by twining tendrils round thin branches, or by tendrils which stick onto flat surfaces? Worth noting that P. quinquefolia is very commonly grown as an ornamental plant in Europe, P. vitacea is only very rarely grown. So P. quinquefolia is far more likely.
Weirdly enough, it has the twining tendrils, so it's vitacea. No idea how it got here. It's in the corner of the garden, so I am leaving it for now as bird food for the winter.
