This is one of a number of named seedlings from the hybrid, Mahonia japonica × Mahonia lomariifolia. This cross has been performed a number of times in a number of places -- it is correctly known by the grex name Mahonia × media -- and has resulted in a many outstanding plants. Other cultivars in the grex include 'Arthur Menzies' (in the Winter Garden), 'Buckland', 'Lionel Fortescue', 'Underway' and 'Winter Sun'.
Regarding the title of this thread, we are now no longer using the name Berberis for the pinnate-leaved, unarmed-stemmed shrubs with terminal inflorescences (i.e., the mahonias). (see Yu & Chung • Molecular recircumscription of Berberis s.l. (Berberidaceae), TAXON 66 (6) • December 2017: 1371–1392) . The correct name for this hybrid is (again) Mahonia x media 'Charity'.
