Of the 23 maples planted this year beni hime had the least scorching and has tossed an impressive 12" growth.... or mystery cultivar. First years looks to grow an avg of 4-6" from internet search.
You will always get some rapid growth of young shoots on pretty much every young cultivator. I would suggest to clip them back to eliminate any unwanted distorted look as the tree matures
i was thinking halve the aproximate number of shoots and cut to 2-3 nodes or a couple of inchs more than canopy
