Hello, we ordered some flowers and trees from a nursery a couple of years ago and as a bonus they sent us this mystery flower....I thought they said it was beauty berry....It is an annual that grows about 7-12' tall, has pinkish red caterpillar sized berries on it.... their really just seeds. I looked up beauty berry on comp and it looks different than these flowers.....beauty berry is shorter and the berries are more individual , and slightly more purplish....also beauty berry has smaller leaves and these have large leaves. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx, Porterbuilt1

This looks like a plant from the knotweed family (Polygonaceae), probably something from the genus Polygonum (or Persicaria if your flora recognizes this as a separate genus). I doubt that there are any berries here. This beautiful plant has tiny pink flowers which you probably considered to be berries.

The pink flowers have black seeds in them probably 40-50 per flower, that are for the most part round with one flatter side on them. I also noted no scent from these flowers, anyhow they sprout thousands of seeds in the spring that have red stems until they are approximately 6" tall then stem turns green and almost bambooish. I have dug these up and given friends transplants from 6' to 5 feet tall, with hardly any casualties. Thanx for your reply.I'm going to do some research on these Polygonaceae.

Polygonum orientale or Persicaria orientalis - synonyms, though I'm not sure which one is the accepted name.

I just found out they call it Kiss-Me -Over-the-Garden-Gate, or Princes Feather. Thanx again everyone it only took about an hour, and I found out what I've wanted to know for 3 years.
