Bark on a crimson queen japanese maple

Discussion in 'Maples' started by untitled, Oct 29, 2005.

  1. Hello everyone I was cutting grass at one of my customers and i was backing up my mower when i noticed her husband was where i needed to turn and to prevent from chopping his feet off with the mower i accidently backed up into her maple tree. The tree is only about 3 feet tall and the trunk is only about 2 inches in dia. The bard was scrapped off on one side about 2 feet up and it also loosened up the root ball. My concern is the tree going to live or is there anything i can to do prevent it from dying. It is getting cold here so its not activly growing. I dont want to see it die I have a one myself and it is going on 3 years onl and i wish i could have a whole yard full of them. If anyone can give me any ideas what it might do or if you know of any way to heal it i would really appreciate it.

    Thank You!
    Paul.

Well, if the root ball was loosened, I guess you would want to try to settle the soil around the roots as much as possible - I think a good watering would help that. And a good layer of mulch to protect them from cold this year seems like a good idea. Other than that I am not sure you can do much but wait to see how it grows next year and remove any dead branches.

I am not sure if there is anything that will help heal the scrape?

Keep it growing well (mulch, irrigation, whatever is needed) so it closes the opening quickly. And don't ever call it a "***" maple, it won't like that at all.
