Hello all, I am writing to see if anyone has observed a disease on the Balsam Fir (Var) trees in Eastern Québec. I currently live in Australia and own property in the Gaspe (Belle-Anse) region of Québec where my parents live and also own bush properties. I am visiting the area and work on my property while here. Last year the Balsam fir trees had browning of needles at the tips of the branches. In springtime new green growth was present. Now the needles are browing at the tips again and some trees have needles falling off further up the branch. No pests are visible on the trees. Several years ago we were hit badly by the spruce bug and large numbers of trees died. The forests have recovered from this here now and have been lush and green. Has anyone else noticed this problem or know what the cause may be. It seems to be widespread in our area. I haven't taken a photo but can do this and post it. Kim
Probably the result of Acid Rain. http://www.corbisimages.com/Enlargement/EC005342.html http://www.ec.gc.ca/eau-water/default.asp?lang=En&n=FDF30C16-1 http://nrs.fs.fed.us/disturbance/pollution/acid_rain_calcium_depletion/
