I recently purchased several plants from a small local nursery here on Vancouver Island. One of them is an Autumn Olive. I was not familiar with it, but it sounded interesting. I have looked it up on Wikipedia and it sounds like it can be quite invasive. I was planning on putting it in an edible perennial garden, full sun, kind of an isolated spot. Should I plant it at all?

Hmm. I see advertised at Elaeagnus umbellata Ruby™ | plant lust Elaeagnus umbellata Ruby™. The description is from Phoenix Perennials at [edited by wcutler - I have updated the link] Phoenix Perennials - Nursery - Plant Display - Elaeagnus umbellata Ruby - Autumn Olive

Not an answer, sorry, just comments while waiting for someone knowledgeable to reply. I wonder if these cultivars would behave differently from the invasive species.

As an aside, here is a blog page that has a lot of photos of several species and cultivars of Elaeagnus.
