autumn olive?

    I found dozens of these growing in a hardwood forest in Maryland. I suspect it is autumn olive, but I want to make sure.

    It's an Elaeagnus of some sort, not an olive (olives have opposite leaves, not alternate like this). Maybe Japanese Silverberry Elaeagnus umbellata, which is invasive in your area.

    Think Michael got it right - E. umbellata - watch for red berries in fall.

    Yet another much cultivated shrub which has become a nuisance plant in eastern North America. Hence the dozens.
