Hi Chris, yes it's been a strange year, and our trees are showing the signs of this. Great to see your photo diary of the differences. Thank goodness for digital photography!!
Love your Japanese theme btw. Lots of hard work clearing the leaves from the raked gravel though, lol.
Nice to see you back on the forum.

Welcome back, I hope all is well.

It seems that when the sun is extremely strong, colors are more red. But also shorter lived.

Here are pictures from 22-26 Oct.

On the 22nd Samantha, who had been sick for a few days, got worse. So I had to rush her to the vet, and give her shots over the next few days. She's fine now, and post appointment was already feeling quite better.

The major loss is the shade for that section of the backyard, everything now will be full sun, with no quick fix.

GGW shows some broken branches and multiple scrapes along trunk, will see if they heal during our rainy season.
2" yesterday with another 1+" tomorrow, we average about 11" a month for the next few months.

Hmmm doesn't sound too bad G. If they are just scraped and haven't girdled the trunk then all should be OK come Spring.
    Fingers crossed for you.

    Hi Derek,

    Is it 'Momoiro Koyasan' ?...
Mine stayed in the shade and is still green all over. Plus, the leaves look a bit different, the lobes are much more pointed, so far it looks like a plazin palmatum...

Various seedlings : those that stayed mainly in the sun display orange-red colours, especially those that are in low trays or bonsai pots.

In a bonsai pot, afternoon sun :

    IMG_div-1738.jpg

    In a plastic "cup", half-sun :

    IMG_div-1739.jpg

In a "TV dinner tray" - the kind you buy and put 3 mn in the microwave oven, half sun. It will be repoted in the blue bonsai pot you can see :

    IMG_div-1740.jpg

A batch of palmatum sp., in the shade. The top leaves are showing some pink :

    IMG_div-1742.jpg

A palmatum sp. that I slip-potted in July. I only added a quarter of a coffe-spoon (in France as big as my thumb's nail, a bit larger than a tea-spoon which is much smaller here).
The new growth is as long as the tree before it was in a new pot. 1-2 hours of sun in the evening.
Behind, 'Bi-hoo' that has lost all its leaves 2 weeks ago. In the background, this Acer campestre that has rounded lobes :

    IMG_div-1750.jpg

I've kept these two in the same spot, in the same kind of pots. The one at the front had a light green, almost yellow bark like 'Bi-hoo' (I never had 'Bi-hoo' seeds), the second one had a reddish colour like that of a 'Sango kaku' :

    IMG_div-1751.jpg

This one was from seeds I collected on dissecums that were planted in a street. On most of the leaves, the central lobe slightly turns to the right. I had an air-layer that survived for 3 years, but died last year. A lot of dissectums and their descent are a bit difficult to keep on their own roots. But I'll try again !

The sun was out first thing this morning, so before the heavy rain that is forecast arrives, I took a couple of photos of my Griseum and Wakehurst Pink to share.

Not a very good year for Autumn display here.

Some trees have leaves that are sun-scorched, others display a rather pale colour compared to previous years. For those that are still mainly green, I don't think the colours will last very long when they turn.

    'Sango kaku', 'O-sakazuki', 'Atropurpureum' :

Another batch off of the phone and onto the computer. From 28 Oct, the end of the nice weather, through the 30th.

I agree @AlainK, colors are often a bit faded, and very short lived. But still very pretty!

The little 'Wakoh nishiki' has been struggling along for years.

My seedling shira. Unfortunately got early hard freeze before color change and only the part of my tree close to the house didn't get crispy
    That part turned out nicely

After all the wind and rain yesterday I was surprised I had any leaves left. But there are a few that are still looking quite pretty in the early sunshine.

    Very nice Derek.

Here too it was rather sunny this afternoon. Some trees are beginning to colour up.

'Ruysen' has lost leaves, but the orange colour of those that are left is great in the sun, not so bad when it's gone :

Two trees I bought in a supermarket. Both had obviously been heavily fed and stayed in a warm environment for some time, maybe that explains why the internodes were so long, and the leaves so fragile.

'Summer Gold', April (when I bought it), June, and today :

At least 80% of my maples have lost all leaves now, we have had lots of wind and rain in the last few weeks. But no serious frosts (I still have a sweet pepper plant outdoors with fruits ripening) so some are still in leaf. Here is one known as Murakumo or Marakumo:

Thanks man, as far as i'm aware the three large trees are all the same just in different parts of the garden, i know they are all approximately 15 years old and have always been in the same position, as for identification....no idea.

    Good luck

Certainly enjoying everyone's pictures this year. It's a relief to see that your trees can still produce so much beauty even in an off year.

Following the warmest October on record in EU, I expect many are looking at the same situation we are here: many trees bare, some trees still fully green and haven't started, some still in the midst of color, more than a few with spring leaves still at the tender stage. Yet it isn't that warm now, down to 6°C at night and a fire in the stove. I see on the beeb that it is still quite warm in England.

    From 2 Nov - 6 Nov.

Koto no ito, still very red on the outside this year. Most of the red leaves have gone brown without falling off now.

I read Emery's post whilst sitting in my garden with a temperature of 17 degrees c . Not complaining as no heating needed indoors. But my trees need to sleep now !!
I have the same with my trees as Emery, some in colour, others completely defoliated and others still green and not in Autumn colours anywhere near yet.
Thought I would take a few new maple pics to share, showing the various colours that are in Autumn ATM.
