Pictured in October 2006 in an English garden. Looks like it grows from a bulb or corm. Excuse my ignorance, it is probably obvious if you know it. Thanks for looking
It reminds me of Gaura lindheimeri Whirling butterflies. But this is not a bulb or corm, but does grow from underground rhizomes. http://images.google.com/images?hl=...meri+'Whirling+butterflies&btnG=Search+images http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaura_lindheimeri
Thanks, I am sure that is the one. I was only guessing about the corm/bulb so the rhizome is not a problem. One of the problems I had with identifying it was that it seems to have disappeared from the garden I pictured it in, which ties in very nicely with what I have now read about Gaura lindheimeri only being short lived in the UK, unless it is given a site that is extremely well drained in winter. Some sites describe it as borderline hardy in the UK, others hardy but short lived. I dug up a good article at telegraph.co.uk if anyone is interested: How to grow: Gaura lindheimeri.
