Wind, sunny patches, then wind, drizzling rain all day : I'm afraid most of the maples that have had their Autumn colours won't keep them very long. So here are photos I think I haven't posted yet, 22nd/26th Oct. Two from seeds, the last one with arching branches, a bit "willowing" if that's correct : Starfish : Little Princess, aka Mapi-no-machi-hime 21st Oct. :
Except for a few really late maples, the weather is doing for us here now. But I do have lots of pictures, and I've decided to start with "current" (around 24/10) and work backwards. Here is Acer griseum (actually still holding its leaves 3 days later after a lot of wind and rain) Acer 'Utsu-semi' Acer 'Koto no ito' A. rufinerve 'Albolimbatum' A. tschonoskii ssp koreanum A. campestre 'Nanum'
@emery Woww amazing..is the A. campestre 'Nanum’ pruned into this shape? @AlainK marvellous colours on those seedlings. Also your bonsai consistently puts into perspective how rubbish I am at keeping trees in small pots #embarrassing
@ROEBUK I can't believe you've got that many leaves left, meant to say before. Those roots have superpowers! :) @dicky5ash 'Nanum' does this naturally, there's an occasional long stem that needs to be pruned, but I've only had to do it once. It was planted in 2015. I did see one that had been left to get away, it wasn't great. But generally you just leave it; often they're grafter as a standard, they make a compact ball. It's funny, but 'Nanum' is one of the most remarked trees in the garden by visitors! @AlainK 's trees always look great! ;)
It's just a matter of soil mix, easy peasy ;0) I lose trees too, like this one that got a fungus, its bark rotten at some point at the base of the trunk, put out new (weak) leaves and died in the heat of August 2020. Last photo : October 6th, 2019 : Just shows that beauty is ephemerous. (I like tyhe music of the word "éphémère".) There's probably a more idiomatic way to say the same. What would you say ? Carpe diem ;°)
Amazing plant and funny visitors . ’nanum’ must be grafted on Acer Campestris. The kraft should bee low, right to the ground level. Such a kraft is difficult to find. Perhaps you have to do it or you can grow a cutting. The soil must be poor, if not, ‘nanum’ growing too much get away. It’s not so easy to do, not as it seems.
AlainK, I enjoyed seeing another creepy 'Starfish'. :) Most of the good colour in Vancouver right now is from maples. I'm posting some street trees. IDs are from the city's database. Maybe they're right. Acer freemanii 'Scarlet Sentinel' on West Georgia, a main street downtown. Acer freemanii 'Autumn Blaze', six blocks west of the above group, on the same street. This is just north of my neighbourhood, almost to Coal Harbour. These are not on the map, maybe were planted by the building. I think they're Acer rubrum. They are on the same street as the other two, almost midway between them. The Acer rubrum 'Bowhall' are a bit more into my West End neighbourhood. These seem to be on private property, but the city has planted them. The one missing so many leaves already has some trunk problems.
The sun is shining here at last and tbh quite a warm start to the day. But everything is soaked and soooo many bare branches after the strong winds. Some colours still here though and my Purple ghost gave me lots of pleasure.
Emery we grow tough trees in Yorkshire, still have around 10 ground trees to colour out yet, always turn around the mid November time, then they are at their best.
Gee I guess they like all that wind! And of course, they do like a lot of water so long as their feet drain, which you see to. Here's a few to bring us up to date, that wouldn't fit in the last post. A. tenuifolium, A 'O kagami', several maples in the Aceretum, A. wilsonii, A. forrestii (probably some sort of A. capillipes hybrid, in reality).
Good afternoon, the weather is so awful here atm that I could only just get out to take a few that are nice and colourful in my garden. Most of mine have now lost their leaves though I do have a few that haven't even changed yet. So these hopefully will be posted in November. Anyway, here are some very wet maples from a few minutes ago.
Speaking of rain just a little shower from this morning until this afternoon !!!! will this rain never end in the UK ? Still have some colour though :)
@ROEBUK I don't think it will looking at the forecast M. Sorry to hear that you are also going into tier 3 on Monday as well. I don't think we will be sad to see this year go. But even with all the water, your garden brings lots of cheer with wonderful maples.
Cheers D certainly looks bad for the next few days re the weather, itching to get out there and start moving things, have done a few already but it's so messy at this time. And for the 3 tier lock down that comes as no surprise what so ever was just a matter of time, lots of things that you are never told about happening in the north of England. More pictures to follow soon :)
Underwater here in the South of England, so just a few taken today. Going to get worse over the weekend as well.

@Luke’s Maples wonderful Luke, every one of them. You have brightened up a very wet and dull afternoon here in Hampshire. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on Germaines Gyration, I'm aware of how fast this one grows and wondered what your plans are with it. Going to be interesting to follow over the coming years !!!
Though the colors have just began changing I will have to consider this the peak as the leaves are vanishing faster than the deep reds developing. 'Seiryu'
I have 2 or three seedlings that have young leaves with rather slender 3 lobes and 2 very small ones near the petiole, and that are only slightly serrated. The older leaves look more dissected as you can see on the photo : 'Orange Dream', 'Beni hagoromo' with 'Tama hime' and 'Trompenburg' and others : Another "unidentified palmatum", likely the plain species : ... and a Pseudocydonia sinensis (chinese quince) with bamboos in the background and a few (still green!) leaves of Prunus mume (Japanese apricot) on the right :
Hi D. Yes I have also heard this. Hoping to be able to create a nice twisty shape with it. Of course I shall keep you posted on its progress.
