    Austrian pine is yellowing

We planted about 2 dozen Austrian pines about 6-7 years ago. They all have grown very well and have no problems...Last summer I noticed some pitch tubes and found a small insect and it was determined to be a turpentine beetle. We smashed all the pitch tubes and then sprayed all the trees with a permerthrin spray. Late this fall (Nov) we noticed one of the tres needles were turning yellow on the inside of tree. Noone can figure out why. Any suggestions??

If it is just the inside (i.e., old) needles that are turning yellow, no problem.

It is only the inside. So you are saying this is natural??

Hmmm . . . that's more than just the old inner foliage; it doesn't look too happy, the leaves look rather a 'dried out' sort of green even on the current growth, and it is 3-year old leaves that have gone brown, rather than 4-5 year old leaves as is normal for Austrian Pine.

It might recover OK, or it might not leaf out in spring. Hard to tell from the photo. Are the buds firm, or dry and brittle?

I'm not sure what the tips are like. I'll have to wait for a little snow to melt. I have three foot drifts out there and its about 10 degrees above zero right now!!

Presume you mean 10 degrees below freezing there - if it's 10 degrees above freezing, it'll melt very quickly!

Michael, Its actually 20 degrees below freezing. That's farenheit not celcius!!!But to day it is going to be 45 degree fahrenheit!! So I think I'll venture out and take a closer look at the pine!!

Michael. I took a look at the pine today. The tips (candle) is very green....no browning and definetly not brittle. As for the needles that are still very green they are very flexible.
