Aster?

I am trying to identify this purple daisy-like flower I found by the edge of a waterfall in the autumn time in central New York, USA (Ithaca, to be precise). Could anyone tell me what it is?

for comparison and a description. Asters are pretty difficult to pin down as there are a lot of species to choose from.
