Some plants from aster family 1. Eriophyllum? June,UBCBG 2.Wild flower along highway in BC, July 3.August, native to BC? 4.Probably UBCBG, July 5.Felicia? October
#1 - Ditto to Eriophyllum. #3 - Conyza (canadensis?) sp. - well, probably #4 - Melampodium divaricatum (Often mislabelled as M. paludosum in horticulture) #5 - Brachyscome sp.
That was all new to me, but I found a page that explains what to look at: http://www.weedinfo.ca/en/weed-index/view/id/TROPR Phyllaries are involucral bracts, which is the term used on that page.
Thank you Andrey for pointing this out. Not being a botanist I have never paid attention to how short or long are phyllaries. As Wendy's link says: So, it looks like there are many mislabeled images on the Net like, for example, here http://www.aphotoflora.com/d_tragopogon_pratensis_goats_beard_jack_go_to_bed_at_noon.html This image also shows on the right of the screen when you search with Google for Tragopogon pratensis https://www.google.ca/search?q=tragopogon+pratensis&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=sb&gfe_rd=cr&ei=RklUVLLUKamV8QfG4YCgCw#rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=sb&q=tragopogon+pratensis. Bing and Yahoo seem to be more reliable! Still, I feel a little confused, since aphotoflora.com looks rather like a reliable website?
Errors are everywhere. I was sending corrections (accepted) to CalPhoto, UVU Herbarium, many personal sites. When you deal with just species description or ambiguous key, the errors are unavoidable. An illustrated species comparison, like the Wendy's link, are much more useful. I made my personal illustrated key for many Utah plants, which helps a lot. Unfortunately, it cannot be public, as I use many copyrighted images, which I am trying to replace with my own. But collectively, such a useful tool can be created if there are sufficient number of enthusiasts and a reliable place on the internet.
