I've always loved the (quaking) aspen trees in the interior and wondered about planting 1 or more in my yard in Tsawwassen. Any advice on doing this?
According to Straley's Trees of Vancouver, Quaking aspen or Populus tremuloides tends to be found only on dry rocky outcroppings on the west coast. They are not common here but can be found in Pacific Spirit Park and around UBC. These trees are beautiful and contribute wildlife value but as a pioneer-type species that is fast growing, short lived and tends to sucker, I wouldn't recommend it for a typical back yard. How big is your back yard? Also, availability may be an issue.
I planned to put them in the front yard which is about 80x40. I hadn't checked local nurseries to see if they are even available. I have just fallen in love with the fall colour and "quaking" leaves. I'm on the top of the hill in Tsawwassen, very close to the water, so somewhat similar to the UBC area.
Hi I'm guessing that your front yard is 80m x 40m. Even an 80' x 40' yard is large. I took a peek at a native plant nursery and they are listed as available. You should probably check the BC Native Plant Society website for a list of native plant suppliers or ask you local nursery to bring some in for you. Trembling aspen aren’t typically used in residential settings but you might have enough room. These trees do grow fast and tend to break easily and probably have assertive root systems. Be mindful of where you plant you trembling aspens.
