There is some lovely asparagus that grows wild in the ditches here. I have notice that some have a lot of seeds on them. How would I go about collecting the seeds and trying to grow some? The seeds look ripe. Could I just collect some and plant them where I would like them to grow.

Asparagus from seed means a long delay prior to getting spears. But pick the wild asparagus in the Spring, but mark the spots where it is growing now, because it may be difficult to find in the Spring, when the spears are prime.

This is the preferred method of growing asparagus, my experience. My bed was started this Spring (2008).

    Howdy JanR,
Just a word of caution. If you collect the seeds from that wild stand, you are most likely to get a bunch of female plants. My experience with female plants is they self seed all over my vegetable garden and is now a weed. I recommend that you buy seeds or plants of males only. The one Durgan planted , Millenium' is all males.
    Peace
