I have four young chestnuts trees I started from nuts; they're in pots under grow lights in my attic. I know I can't probably grow them here in my yard (mountains of Colorado, zone 3 or sometimes 4 and chestnuts seem to be listed for zone 5). But I know I can give them to others in milder areas. My big question now is that there seems to be some yellowish blotches on the leaves of two of them. I hope I have been able to attach a picture. If anyone has ideas what I can do to help these two little trees, I would sure love to hear it. Other pictures are here http://community.webshots.com/album/580027235iPVTWa Thank you!
Those are Horse-chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum) you have there, not chestnuts (Castanea spp.). Note that the nuts are poisonous, you can't grow them for food. Looks like a nutrient deficiency, not too surprising in such small pots. Repot into larger (particularly deeper) pots, and plant outside in the ground as soon as frost risk is finished.
Ok, larger, deeper pots coming up. But wouldn't plant food (Miracle Gro) help them? Have used it twice. Thanks so much for the tip!
