Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my tree? and how to fix it? Where the new blossoms are supposed to be, is instead clumps of green/brown. This is happening on almost the entire tree. It is looking very thin and frail. The tree is probably about 15+ years old. Any help is appreciated!
Re: Bradford Pear Problem Main problem is it isn't a Bradford Pear. It looks more like a Black walnut. http://opulentopossum.blogspot.com/2009/05/black-walnut-flowers.html
Re: Bradford Pear Problem Not a Black Walnut either, note the opposite leaves . . . It is an ash Fraxinus, with its flowers damaged by ash flower gall mite Eriophyes fraxiniflora. This minor pest doesn't harm the tree, so no need to treat it with anything. The thin-ness of the tree will have some other cause. Check for soil compaction, for one very common cause of poor growth in ashes. Being planted too deep is another common cause. Also look for borer holes in the trunk, in case it has been attacked by emerald ash borer.
Re: Bradford Pear Problem Thanks you for your quick response! You're right its not a Bradford, it is an ash. We had two other trees that were bradfords. I'm no tree expert (obviously). So the flower damage is nothing to be concerned about? Will it resolve itself?
It'll probably re-appear, but the damage it does is insignificant (particularly as ash flowers aren't an important ornamental feature of the tree)
