    Idears?

The second was has kind of a hairy stem. Should maybe the hairy stem go all the way into the soil?

Not sure because of the blurriness of the pictures but the first one looks like Crassula ovata 'Gollum', Trumpet Jade.

When taking photos like this try stepping back a little further and use the camera to zoom in on the subject. Digital cameras don't seem to focus well if you're too close to what you're trying to a take photo of.
As to i.d. I agree with no 1 being Crassula not sure on 2 but if the 'hairs' are fine roots beginning to form I'd clip some of the stem and plant so they are covered. i.e. make it a cutting. Otherwise don't plant too deep as you are likely to end up rotting the stem.

Yeah, I apologize for the pics. I don't have a battery for my real camera, so I take my pics with the camera on my phone. It doesn't zoom, so I have to hold it real close.

A couple of notes about the plants:

On the first one, the plant actually had larger groupings of those type of leaves (they're still leaves, right?) on top of long woody stems, as I recall. My 'cutting' was actually just a piece that had fallen from the top of its trunk/branch, and was just starting to try and root out into the soil.

The second one, about the root. There is still a portion of the plant that fills the entire depth of soil in that cup. It has thicker roots on it. I wasn't sure about the hairy part because it looked so different from the thicker root-y looking portion. The hairs were also already formed when I took the cutting, and do not appear to have been in the soil at any time.

I should probably get a new battery for my cam this xmas and just go up to school in january and take some pics of the parent plants.

Nah, not yet. Being that they're succulents and that my apartment is pretty low-light, I figured I'd better not bond with them too much until I find out if they're going to survive or not. If we keep it impersonal, I'll be able to better handle the loss...
