Wait and see if it suckers from the base. The main stalk was probably killed.

Yes if the meristem (growing point) is dead then that trunk will eventually die.
However if there is a living bud near the roots then re-sprouting is possible.

Pawskiwi, in Central Florida we generally let apparently dead things linger until a full growing season has passed. That's laissez-faire gardening at it's best. A columnist for the Daytona News-Journal calls himself a Darwinian Gardener, meaning he let's Nature do what she will do.

Is your areca palm dead? Yeah, might could be. They tend to get a bit ugly even while living, and I don't know any really old ones so this may not be a bad thing. But if you are swooning with the heatwave we've been having, just put a couple more cubes in your tea and wait until fall.

    It could rally. Or not.

I'm looking at a croton I thought was dead for sure, but it's sprouting now. In the middle of July...

I'm very patient when it comes to plants that usually surprise u!!! My croton is growing now too and it looked completely gone!!! So thankyou the trunks r sturdy and strong so who knows maybe just waiting on the areca is the key!! thank you
