I was planning on growing my own tabbaco this year to make my own chew, unfortunetly i couldt find the right type of nicotiana. so as i was talking to a guy at a local farmers market he said i should just use petunias. so i thought maybe hes right, it is from the same family. but i wanted to get some more opinions on the matter to see if it is a good idea or not thanks
According to Charles B. Heiser, Jr. in The Fascinating World of Nightshades, the name petunia comes from a Brazilian aboriginal word for tobacco . Many plants in the family, Solanaceae, are quite toxic. I can't really find good info on whether or not petunias are toxic. I would use caution. Can't recommend ingesting anything unless you know for sure it is safe.
Better to keep looking until you can find true tobacco; I'm not sure about the toxicity of petunias, but I wouldn't try it anyhow.
