I was planning on growing my own tabbaco this year to make my own chew, unfortunetly i couldt find the right type of nicotiana. so as i was talking to a guy at a local farmers market he said i should just use petunias. so i thought maybe hes right, it is from the same family. but i wanted to get some more opinions on the matter to see if it is a good idea or not

    thanks

Don't know about Petunia, but Nicotiana is certainly VERY poisonous.

According to Charles B. Heiser, Jr. in The Fascinating World of Nightshades, the name petunia comes from a Brazilian aboriginal word for tobacco . Many plants in the family, Solanaceae, are quite toxic. I can't really find good info on whether or not petunias are toxic.

I would use caution. Can't recommend ingesting anything unless you know for sure it is safe.

Better to keep looking until you can find true tobacco; I'm not sure about the toxicity of petunias, but I wouldn't try it anyhow.
