A couple of years ago, my children kept tropical fishes, i got the regurlar stuff for their aquariums. among those aquatic plants, after the fishes went down the toilet. I tried to keep the plants alive, they did well for a couple of years but then they died. I want to have aquatic plants again, I want suggestions in which one is better for inside the house, and which one is going to be strong enough to survive winter here in Pennsylvania. Thanks. for your time. GB.
I have aquatic plants year round. Some will die back completely once a year, some limp along. Your aquarium plants may have died because there were no fish providing fertilizing poop. Vallisnerias are cool, whatever size. I have some from a local pond that grow quite long in that pond, but stay within a foot long in the one aquarium I planted with it. Spreads easily. I have some snails in there, and occasionally do radical water changes or slip cuttings I want to keep wet in there: hardly the best environment for the vals. Mine are doing well right now, but I expect by January, most of the growth will have died back and been eaten by the snails or washed away in water changes. Ludwigia will most certainly drop leaves and die after a time. Plus it likes to grow emersed a bit in natural environments. The banana plant, Nymphoides aquatica is kinda cool looking and at the very least you'll be seeing the "banana" clump of roots year round, but it too has a season of best growth.
