We live very close to the lake and our garden is soggy 6 months out of 12. It is spongy with lots of moss that die out in summer and a water table only a foot deep beneath a slab of green clay which make every tree planting a fight with raising water.
I still manage to get a lot to grow but establishment is difficult for new plants and my plum trees bear very little fruits. I fertilize and use raised beds with some success but I wander if this type of soil is acidic by nature.
Is there some known issue with this type of soil I could mitigate with a treatment?
Any advice or info on the soil in this area would be helpful.
    Thank you!

You can do a basic pH test with a hot tub test kit from say, H.D. or Rona. I'll bet your soil is slightly acidic.

    Thanks David,
I could do a test but it would give me little info saves the PH and I was hoping to spare myself the expense of a full analysis. I was curious to hear of somebody living around Trout Lake in Vancouver BC or, I guess, around any other similar lake. Some gardeners like me who could share their experience with this type of soil.
