This plant, which appears to be a bulb, corm or tuber, is flowering now here (just after midsummer). It has grassy foliage, rather stiff and with a prominent midrib. The flowers have a hint of Albuca about them, but I really don't know. Any ideas?

Thanks, Andrey. That looks to be a good match. I would never have got that one as the genus is one with which I was totally unfamiliar.

I see that The Plant List (among others) suggest that the name is now Anticlea elegans. A pity as I was looking forward to adding another Z name to my list.
