I have a ant problem with a few of my maples. The ants are at the base of the trees. What safe way can i get rid of them? Thanks in advance.

Are the trees potted or planted? When I had the problem in the past with some potted trees sitting on a wood bench, I simply 'painted' some malathion onto the bench where the pot was sitting, and the base of the pot itself; seemed to work quite well. Not sure what to do about the planted trees though; maybe some of those outdoor ant traps?? I would like to know others solutions to this problem as I think I might encounter it this year; when doing some late spring raking, etc, around the trees, I've come across some decent ant nests.
