Two weeks ago, we bought a new Anthurium plant which looked very healthy. We kept it indoor, near the balcony door on the South side - so it gets diffused light but no direct sun. In these two weeks, we gave water twice (allowing the soil to dry out a little). On the day we bought the plant we sprayed "Indoor Pharm - Insecticidal Soap Plus" which, as advertized, is supposed to treat Mildews, Horticultural fungus and garden pests) About two days ago we noticed the following problems: 1) Some leaves developed brown spots, with hole in the middle (See first photo) 2) Some leaves have holes -no brown spots. ( pls see second photo) 3) New flower that came up is very small compared to the ones it already had when we bought the plant. 4) A new stem (we do not know it would have been a leaf or flower) turned brown before even opening the leaf (which was rolled). It looks like this stem died. 5) Since the time we bought the plant, the center stem on the flower (I dont know what it is called) has some nodules at the base - pls see the third photo. Is this normal or is something wrong with this? Can you please advise what should I do to get rid of these? If there is a pesticide I have to use, please do recommend a brand that you can trust. Similarly if we have to give a fertilizer, please let me know which Brand and what it is called. This is the first ever plant in our home in my life, so I am not knowledgable about all the brands etc.. (A small request - when I asked several questions in the same post on some other forums, my experience was the most people answer the first one..and probably by the time they finish typing they forget the others, which remain unanswered. Will you pls help with all of the above?) Thanks Arun Arun
This plant is more than likely an Anthurium andreanum hybrid. The browness is usually a result of sun and/or wind, but you say yours has been inside. Some Anthurium hybrids, the new leaves are a brown or bronze colour, but they shouldn't die... The centre 'stalk' is a spadix, and being swollen at the bottom is possibly some sort of variable. This plant is an aroid, and you or the moderators may want to move this thread there for some more expert advice. A good genreal site for Anthuriums is here Hope I helped somewhat... Ed
