One of my maples (that I planted in the ground in May) is starting to 'grow' again. New red leaves and new stems. It is the beginning of summer here and starting to hit the 90's.

Is the sky falling? Or s my OCD just kicking in?

That's good. Keep your hands off the pruners and just enjoy :) water it with care.
On my trees, some leaves might not fully open and end up getting burned up, I do not know what is up with that one.

Thanks for the words. You'd think these were gold trees that grow rubies the way I fret over them.

    chucko,

the new growth is a good thing with maples. While it is not accurate to say the all japanese maples will put out a summer flush of growth, most will. So I always hope for this to happen. It tells me the plant is doing well, and if recently planted or potted, gives me an idea that the root system is doing well also. What you should not really worry about is the quality of the leaves. Often they are quite stunning in contrast to the mature foliage and look different from spring growth, but often they are small, deformed or just don't quite mature like they should. I suspect these problems are related to moisture and heat and as long as there is no twig die back from heat or lack of moisture, there is nothing to worry about.

It is important to fret over your plants is that is how you will get to know them. As time goes by, you won't worry so much. Learning to see the characteristics of the plant now will help you over time.

    All the best,
    Michael

Good to know! I'm going to slowly figure these majestic trees out. And you are right the new growth leaves are bright red. And so far, knock on wood, they look great. I'm hoping this will be a mild summer for Sacramento.

Who would have thought I'd be addicted to trees!
