Could you please identify this grass for me? It grows up to 1 m tall here, has rhizomatous roots. The leaves are glaborous, the stems are perfectly rounded. It grows in open ground here, in dry and sandy soil, but it would prefer better conditions, I believe. On the picture it grows in a clump, but if I am not confusing it with another grass, the stalks usually grow at a short distance from each other, probably attached to the same rhizome. Everything else can be seen on the pictures. I promise, there will be only one more ... at least for this year.
Probably, some Muhlenbergia. There are 7 species in BC. Three can be ruled out easily: M. filiformis (mostly annual without rhizomes), M. asperifolia (open panicle), and M. richardsonii (narrow leaves < 2 mm). M. mexicana has slightly more spreaded panicle. That is about all that can be decided by the photos. The other three - M. andina, M. glomerata, and M. racemosa - rather require microscope to resolve.
Thanks Andrey. The grass seems to be taking over in the area where I live, normally very hot and dry with a sandy, impoverished soil.
One week later. Now, when I finally started to really see grasses (better late than not at all, as they say), I see how quickly and drastically they change their appearance. And I appreciate your answers Andrey even more now, too. I have found the key for the area where I live but it looks like it is not working http://www.livinglandscapes.bc.ca/grasses/beginSearch.jsp . I sent them email but so far no answer.
Their database is probably down, maybe they turn it off on weekends. Requesting check list does not work either.
