My sister bought this fella for my wife and I for the birth of our new baby. What is it? Sis let her kid carry the plant in and there went the tags and balloons. Most notably the new fella has leaves in groups of three and strange speckled leaf stems. Oh, the leaves towards the bottom seem wider than those further up. Thanks in advance for any help. I searched the "20 most popular house plants" mini web sites and couldn't turn it up.
Looks like Schefflera elegantissima (syn. Dizygotheca elegantissima), False Aralia. At first I thought there may be two plants but the two different leaf forms, juvenile and mature, can also be seen in the specimen in the thread Identification: - Need ID for 2 indoor plants | UBC Botanical Garden Forums.
Congratulations on your kid! And what an excellent sister you have: she gives great baby gifts. I had one of these plants years ago---grew to be 5' tall. Beautiful!
