A friend who lives in San Diego sent me a photo of a plant that seeded itself in his yard. Any ideas what it could be? This is what he says in his e-mail:

Outside my bedroom window is a 10 foot strip of dry dirt that hasn't seen any moisture since March. Popping up from that dirt is this strange plant that no one can identify, now about 3 feet tall with huge leaves about 8"x12" . It's growing about an inch a day.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Nicotiana glauca; a weed, but the hummingbirds like it.

Yup, that's a nicotiana alright. I'd vote to leave it there - sometimes weeds are worth it! Especially for the hummingbirds.
