Hi all, I received this mystery plant from Guy Maillot, which was supposed to be Hogyoku. M. Maillot graciously refunded the purchase when the mistake was made known, and I stuck the plant in the ground to evaluate. It's very pretty, leafs out early, retains spring color well. Fall color orange. May be a dwarf, quite small leaves.

    Any guesses?

Certainly not Orange Dream, (I have 2), I don't think Katsura either. I've seen more than a couple, these leaves are too small.

Hi Emery, Are 'Chiba' and/or 'Kashima' ruled out ?

    Hi Chimera,
I do not have 'Chiba', but it is not 'Kashima'.

    Emery,
why don't you go through the 800+ drawings at Maillot's website ;o)))

I may have one or two suggestions but it is dark and can't go out for checking the names. But, frankly, there are so many 'new' cultivars at Maillot's that the chances of finding out are scant. I have myself 4 cultivars (grafted plants) from the same supplier which had a mistaken label, well in 3-4 years I have not been able to figure it out (nothing really distinctive) and have given up.

Hi Gomero, Have 'Chiba' here , expect it's properly labeled, came from a longtime Japanese family run nursery. A pic of 'Chiba' was entered in the Maple Photo Gallery titled 'Kashima', it seems they are quite different trees after seeing further information. Emery, For what it's worth, the 'Chiba' here seems to lose the red edged leaf colouration with warming temperatures, sunlight, and is fairly vigorous for a dwarf . Tree is about H 1.5m. x W 4m. { H5' x W12'}. Early to leaf out, leaves 5cm. x 5cm. {2" x 2"}, petioles about 4cm. { 1.5"} mainly 5 lobed. Fall colours orange and purplish with late afternoon shade. A photo here http://ganshuku.cool.ne.jp/23_1chibayatsufusa.html titled 'Chiba Yatsufusa' . Your leaves seem rather orange, maybe from the lighting, and may be smaller.

Chimera, the picture is taken in natural (a bit cloudy) light, and seems to me that the colors are pretty true. Chiba yatsuba is certainly an idea; mine doesn't match Maillot's pic at all though. To me the tips look a little less acuminate than on yours. Certainly we had some quite warm weather, about 2 weeks worth, though it's now cold and dropping into the 40s F at night, much to the disgust of the vegetation. This guy has kept his color.

    Gomero, only 800 drawings? ;)

    Emery,
Check out the Uenos (yama and homare). Ueno homare is the first pic and yama the second.

Emery, We had 27-31 degree C temperatures for about a week a month ago, about 15-18 deg. C. since then and a few weeks before. 'Ueno yama' leaves are quite a bit smaller than the 'Chiba' leaves right now, if that might help. Gomero, a nice looking plant association with the white flowers as a background for the maple leaves. Agree , sometimes seems to be an exercise in futility to id a tree thought to be a cultivar, have a few unknowns.
