If there was a tag or plaque for this tree, I missed it! Located near the entrance of this little jewel of a botanical garden at the Chittenden Locks in Seattle.

Can anyone tell me what tree this is? Blooming and very fragrant two weeks ago. Probably 20 feet tall. Thanks in advance. What a neat resource! Thanks for having me.

David! That's it! I was searching trees hopelessly. You're the best!

Seen here and there, conspicuous and distinctive at this time of the year - spotted one across the street from a play-field park I was walking around just this afternoon. Local independent garden centers here often stock it.

    A. Jacobson, Trees of Seattle - Second Edition (2006) lists the species as being in "Locks bed #311".

I have a young one in my backyard just breaking into bloom.
