Here´s one I came accross this morning. I had to clean off the Thunbergia to get a picture. Couldn´t find a leaf. The stem is woody with very small thorns and this plant is about 40cm high.
Erythrina cf. fusca, I believe. You wouldn't see leaves on it while it's blooming - they don't develop until after the fruit.
Thanks lorax. My plant is at 2100m. From what I´ve read that seems to be well above it´s normal range but it is growing in a spot where it´s unlikely it would have been planted ie not on anyone´s finca.
Well, it's cf. fusca, not the species proper - I figure it's some odd, obscure Erythrina that I can't find in my books. Down here, that one is found between 1200 and about 2200 m, particularly in cloud forest.
