I have a large fig tree that shades the patio at the side of the house. It produces some lovely fruit . . . but it needs pruning . . .just to tidy and open it a bit . . .when is a good time to do this . . .? the winter is mild . . . the tree quite protected . . . should I take out a little old wood, or damaged bits this winter . . . ? thanks for your help, gayle foster
Where frosts occur, figs are pruned after the worst of these are over, in early spring. Brickell & Joyce, Pruning & Training say "In warm climates...cut spreading branches to upright shoots, and leave growth in the center to give protection from sun scorch."
