Hello everyone - I'm new to the forum and hope my problem is clearly outlined. I have an amur maple which develops dark brown leaves, schrivles up, dies and falls off.
(Before the leaves turn dark brown, they become a light yellow and look unhealthy. ) The branch that's left is also dark brown but hasn't fallen off yet. I don't believe the tree is dead because this also happened to a lesser degree last year. I have tried keeping the tree in dappled light, and then in full sun. I've also given it Miracid and iron supplements hoping its only an iron deficiency problem. nothing seems to work. Can this be whats called verticillium wilt disease? Has anyone else had this problem.?

It's in a container or you transplanted it? And yes, verticullium wilt was my first thought.

Maybe a climate incompatibility? Amur Maple comes from eastern Siberia, hardly the same climate as California!

Thanks for the replies. The amur is a bonsai in a bonsai pot. You're right CA is not Siberia but I had hopes. If it is v. wilt, it there any hope other than death?

Mineral salts in irrigation water may be the problem if you are in southern California.

If you want a maple to bonsai, try Acer monspessulanum, A. obtusifolium, or A. sempervirens, they are better adapted to your climate.
