This huge fungi is one of the most amazing things I've seen in nature. Could anyone help me precisely ID it?
Greetings Linnaea, This looks like a species of Laetiporus, or Chicken of the Woods. If growing from conifer, L. conifericola, if growing from cherry or similar hardwood, likely L. gilbertsonii. There may be other Laetiporus species here, but the word is that L. sulfureus is not currently considered to be a species found in this region. ... Note: If you are considering it in terms of eating, please be aware that these particular specimens look too old to eat: Normally folks look for the fresh pale growing edge, as well as leaving the bulk of the tougher portion of the mushroom undisturbed to continue to produce soft growing edges :-). Also the flavour is not to everyone's taste, so trying a small (cooked) bit at first is better than harvesting a bunch just to be thrown away & wasted (this scenario seems to happen a lot so worth mentioning).
