On impulse, I bought a 4-foot Magnolia 'Yellow Bird' today at a local garden centre because it was 50% off and I've always admired them. I can offer it everything it wants except, perhaps, deep, loamy soil. In fact, I have no idea how far down the 'soil' is where I want to plant it and it is more sandy/rocky than loamy. I haven't brought the tree home yet (didn't have my truck) so I could still change my mind. This is certainly not the best time to plant a balled and burlapped tree during a heat wave although it looked very healthy in the store. So, should I take the risk?
