These anemone-like things were distributed, randomly, throughout a row of white cedars, in Woodridge, NY, seen 5-31-08, and presently, shriveling-up.
    Identify, please?

The trees are junipers (Juniperus), not cedars (Cedrus). The 'alien thing' is the spore body of a Gymnosporangium rust fungus.

And bracing myself for more 'common name' comments from a certain Limey, White Cedar in North America refers to either Thuja occidentalis or Chamaecyparis thyoides. Red Cedar is often applied to Juniperus virginiana in the east and Thuja plicata in the west.

You have a Juniperus...can't tell though if it is J. virginiana
