We planted an Alberta spruce recently. It's 4 feet high, and we've been told that they grow slowly. I'm wondering though if we made a mistake because its side is only about 6-12 inches from the gas line to our house (the center of the trunk is slightly further than that). The gas line is a meter and half below the surface (59 inches).

Do Alberta spruce roots grow that deep, and if so are we at risk that it may eventually meander over to where the gas line is and push its way into it?

It'll be safe. The roots won't penetrate a gas pipe.

The only potential danger with planting close to gas pipes is if you plant a large tree, which could blow over in a storm when it is mature and pull the pipe out of the soil in the root ball. This isn't going to happen with a dwarf spruce.
