Hello everyone I was wondering if by chance anybody knows a way to get my grape vine to start produce grapes. I think its about 8-9 months old and I have pruned it a couple of times. I from my understanding it supposse to start producing around this age. I live in the country of Belize and this is my first grape vine. Grapes don't really grow naturally down here so I try to keep as best care as possible for my little one :). So is it ok to just leave it and time will take its coarse or do I just have to prune and cut back. Some one please help I don't want too injury it lol. Thanks Mr. Jang
If you cut all the old stems back too much you may prevent flowering. Growth habit and pruning approach varies a bit with the particular variety of grape. Wine grapes in vineyards are routinely pruned quite hard, table grapes maybe not so much. But even with wine grapes you first establish a ~permanent framework of main branches that are not cut into. Try giving it a large space to grow in and training it to cover that. Also try searching "grapes pruning", "grape cultivation" and the like for web pages going into detail about pruning.
Hi Mr. Jang--have you seen any grape vines producing fruit where you are? I'm not that familiar with your climate, but nearby areas are quite tropical which might prevent a grape plant from flowering/fruiting properly. Do you get much of a cool season to allow the vine to go dormant, for example? I think this would be a problem in a truly tropical climate (wishing I had such problems today with more snow forecast!)
I don't know about that. When I was in Mauritius in the 90s Oxenhams were planting vineyards in an attempt to produce a Mauritian wine. Don't know how successful they were, but they've been in the wine business for some time. My vine is two years old and hasn't flowered yet, but next year might well be good.
