I adopted a tropical plant from a girl in the office that was moving. She didnt know what kind of plant it was. It was fairly healthy looking, some brown leaves, and green leaves with dead tips that I cut off. It look pretty good now and I see some new sprouts showing right in the middle of the cluster of leaves. Id like to know what kind of plant it is so I can take care of it properly, and just know what kind of plant it is.
I am attaching a picture of it. If anyone can help me identify it, and give proper care instructions that would be great.

Dracaena of some sort; I'm horrible with the species and cultivars. It looks very happy; I'd keep doing whatever you're doing.

It's small size suggest D. fragrans 'Compacta' but then it doesn't seem to have quite the right look so I'd go with something in the D. fragrans (Deremensis Group).

Perhaps our old friend 'Janet Craig'.

I thought of that too but it doesn't have the typical look of that cultivar. Maybe that's what it looks like when young. I would have guessed 'Warneckii' but I don't see the coloration.

I think we have it. Thanks for all the feed back. Its:

Dracaena deremensis 'Janet Craig Compacta,' which is no longer regarded as the correct currant name, D. fragrans 'Compacta,' even though still often listed by the old synonym.

Potted dracainas are shrubs that will slowly grow to be small trees, & in their native South African are fifteen feet tall. But 'Compacta' is a dwarf version which, when adapted to a pot, can potentially grow four to six feet, although frequently only a foot or two tall, & nicely suited to boggy terrarium.

Perhaps I will start a terrarium or even a salamander & frog vivarium for it...Or just buy a nicer pot for this vibrant, lovely plant.

    Thanks again all

    Bill
