Admirable Bolete behaviour

    Why is Boletus mirabilis often found growing on (through) wood?

    For example, could it be supplementing its diet of mycorrhizally-obtained tree sugars with wood breakdown products? Or maybe it senses a nice, helpfully more-damp area in the chunk of wood? Or...?

    Curious minds want to know....
