    I know I've stated that I was waiting until the new version of the forums software comes out before making any changes, but I installed this hoping to resolve an issue with links to maps in the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival forum.

    Seems to work well enough, so I've decided to keep it.

    You can now add a Google map to a post. To do this, you need to use the BBCode map, like so (ignore the bolding, that's not necessary)

    Code:
    [map=Caption]6804 SW Marine Drive[/map]
    so, for example,

    Code:
    [map=My Office]49.253908N,123.250913W[/map]
    produces this:

    [map=My Office]49.253908N,123.250913W[/map]

    To plot multiple points, you separate both the captions and coordinates with semi-colons, e.g.,

    Code:
    [map=My Office;I Live Here]49.253908N,123.250913W;49.250551N,123.255057W[/map]

    Yes, I'm having issues with what I suspect is a bug in this version of vBulletin with layered vBulletin code...

    A few provisos:

    1) one map per post (though you can have multiple points on the map)
    2) don't cut and paste my code above - to get it working, I had to insert a hidden character because of what I think is a bug in this version of vBulletin. You'll have to type out [ m a p ]6804 SW Marine Drive [ / m a p ] (without all of the spaces between the square brackets)
    3) you may have to refresh the page to get the map working

    Trying . .

    [map]55.00N,2.50W[/map]

    Yikes, it works!!

    My main worry is that it takes quite a while to load even with cable; could be a nightmare for those still using dial-up.

    Now we all know where Michael lives! We just have to look for a giant red pointer with a black dot in the middle.

    That isn't where I live . . . just selected a couple of simple coordinates 55N 2.5W. It's actually very close to the geographical centre of Great Britain. Click on 'Satellite' and you'll see it's the middle of a field ;-)

    The [map] code appears to be broken. Maps are not being displayed for the previous posts.

    Thanks, probably happened when I did the forum upgrades. I have to do a minor upgrade next week, so will fix it then.

    I can't see them either, and I'm really keen to understand how to do it now.
    I did get a movable map last month, but it didn't have the link to the gmap, which is the most important part, and now I can't remember how I even got that. I've tried a few things in the testbed and am not getting a map at all.

    This is from a note from Daniel last year, which coding tried to copy but can't seem to make work. Daniel wrote:
    I just took the coordinates from a Google map link URL, like so:

    (this isn't the correct link, but it'll do for illustration...)

    http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=49.253908,-123.250913&spn=1.168359,2.570801&t=h&z=9

    And posted it as :

    (map=My Office]49.253908N,123.250913W[/map)
    (I had to destroy the syntax to do the posting, as I'm getting the same error message trying to post the words in Daniel's note as I get when I try to do the posting! The outside ( and ) are supposed to be [ and ] - see next sentence)
    Now with similar coding, I'm getting "Invalid address: 49.277829N,123.133392W" and can't do the posting.

    I think google says the maps cannot be embedded (beneath their graphics).

    I'm not sure what you mean, Bob. I'm just trying to have a thumb of the appropriate section and zoom of the google map, and have something to click to go to the version on gmaps. I think they do that by supplying a link to click on below the map. What I'm trying to do is on a lot of websites, and they supply the code for webpages, but the trick seems to be figuring out how to apply that to this forum.

    Sorry, I'm stumped too. Maybe the software here is old.

    Okie dokie, so the old plugin that was used no longer works -- and won't work with version 3.7 of the boards as it no longer seems to be updated. If I try to remove that plugin, it also causes page errors... so I suppose I'll close this thread and start a new one with instructions then one day try and clean out all of the old Google Map tags.

    The thread with the new instructions is here.
