I planted this Joe Witt maple last fall--it was an end of season sale item and was burlapped in mostly clay. We cleared the clay off and spread the roots etc. It has been growing quite a lot this year. Have searched online to see if I can tell what its growth habit will be. Right now it is like it has several leaders. It had been trimmed quite a bit when it was potted up I think and had almost all branches reaching upwards. Now it looks like it is reaching out to the side with the new growth as well as upward. I trimmed the lower outward growing branches off since it would be hard to mow under after awhile. What I am asking about is anyone's opinion on whether I should let all of the top growers grow or try to come up with a leader?

I know it is hard to see the top branches in the photo. Too much green everywhere!

    Thanks.

Thanks Alex. I thought so too. I think I will wait till the leaves fall and then decide on a leader. Carol
