I planted this Joe Witt maple last fall--it was an end of season sale item and was burlapped in mostly clay. We cleared the clay off and spread the roots etc. It has been growing quite a lot this year. Have searched online to see if I can tell what its growth habit will be. Right now it is like it has several leaders. It had been trimmed quite a bit when it was potted up I think and had almost all branches reaching upwards. Now it looks like it is reaching out to the side with the new growth as well as upward. I trimmed the lower outward growing branches off since it would be hard to mow under after awhile. What I am asking about is anyone's opinion on whether I should let all of the top growers grow or try to come up with a leader? I know it is hard to see the top branches in the photo. Too much green everywhere! Thanks.
hi Acer tegmentosum Joe Witt is one medium size cultivar of maple the original plant is in Washington Park Arboretum ~ UW Botanic Gardens i suggest come up with a leader alex
Thanks Alex. I thought so too. I think I will wait till the leaves fall and then decide on a leader. Carol
