A species in Acer sect. Palmata. Can you get additional photos, to show the following details? * Enlarged photo of a shoot with buds * Enlarged photo of petiole and underside of leaf * Flowers (in spring!) and fruit Otherwise, try this key from the Flora of China. Note though that it only covers species found in China, so does not include some found only in Japan, etc. http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=317189
Hello MichaelF, I know it is acer sieboldianum. There are labels at the trees and on the labels one can read "acer sieboldianum" but nothing else, no name which cultivare. It may be acer sieboldianum 'osiris' as it is described by van Gelderen in Maples for gardens on page 253, but I'm not shure. The picture by van Gelderen shows a twig with leaves and looks quite similar with one can see on my photos, particularely the leaf shape is quite similar. Partikular are the very small nine-lobed leaves which are allways hold out horizontally (like on the photo by van Gelderen), the multistemmed upright growth of the tree and the cascading growth of the branches. Van Gelderen says that 'osiris' growth up to 10 m (33 feet) that compares to the trees on my pictures. It can't be 'sode no uchi' which has similar leaves but not the typically cascading groth of the branches and which only reaches 3 m in hight. The leaves are thin and a little bit translucent but without pubescent underneath as van Gelderen says about 'osiris'.
