Can anyone tell me how late Acer pycnanthum leafs out? I want to plant it near Magnolia xsoulangiana, but I don't want it to obscure the Magnolias which are in bloom early February for us in Berkeley. I would hope it is later.

    Thanks!

    Hi Elaine,

I applaud your choice of A. pycnanthum. However I don't know whether you are in Richmond: Yorkshire, Virginia, London, San Francisco (given that you mention Berkeley)?

Here in Normandie pycnanthum will leaf out at about the same time as its American cousin A. rubrum, which is to say the first week of April or so.

    cheers,

    -E

    Hi Emery,

Thank you for responding to my post. I would have replied to you sooner, but my computer was stolen! Anyway, I am fine.

From the information you provided I think it will not be a problem to plant the maple near the magnolias. To clarify, I am planting it at the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, in Berkeley, California. We have a few M. xsoulangiana trees dating to the 1940's, but have lost some in that area also. It is always a challenge to find space for large trees in an established arboretum, but this does seem like a suitable site for the Acer pycnanthum, moist and sunny, and not a lot of root competition.
    Thank you!
    Elaine S.

    Hi Elaine,

Sorry to hear about your computer, what a drag. Of course I should have figured out 'Richmond' in the east bay, I did drive through it often enough when I lived in SF!

Sounds like a perfect site for the pycnanthum. I took a quick gander at the collection, very nice to see that several A. mono are planted, (as well as many other interesting maples of course!) I always feel like this tree is underplanted in western gardens. Nice you are able to grow A. laurinum too, I wish I could...

    cheers,

    -E
