Many maple cultivars have been mildewing around here in recent years, I am pretty sure this includes 'Esk Sunset'.

For those who own this cultivar, preferably for a decent amount of time, can you speak to it's ability to deal with heat/humidity? When I do a search, in many places it is indicated that Eskimo Sunset does well in these conditions, however, I have just been informed by the nursery I am thinking of acquiring this cultivar from, that it will wilt and die in heat and humidity, and therefore, they won't warranty it if I do purchase it.

This cultivar has intrigued me for a while, there's nothing else out there quite like it, but I don't want to get one if it's just going to kick the bucket...

    Hi Andrea,

Unlike Alex I can't speak specifically to this cultivar's resistance, as regular "heat and humidity" from a Kansas point of view aren't real issues in Normandie. However I can say that typically sycamore maples (this is one) are known for their ability to deal with difficult conditions. Alex's has done well with hot dry conditions, and I wouldn't think adding humidity would contradict his experience.

Generally speaking pseudoplatanus is much, much easier than any JM you'd care to name...

Emery, Alex, thank you for commenting. See, and that's kind of what I thought. But yet, in asking this same question of a few people in the SE (Georgia, etc) who would have heat and humidity similar to that of Kansas - though, probably even a bit more humid - they have said it is prone to mildew and is not entirely reliable. It's frustrating when you get two different answers to a question...

This tree is just amazing especially when there is a light breeze and the underside of the leaves display their beautiful rust colours.
I have mine positioned in full sun and it copes very well.
These photos are from Spring and Summer 2020.

20th August 2020 and after days of rain after a heatwave, everything is picking up again. Severe storms coming tomorrow, so I hope I can batten down the hatches so to speak and protect my trees.
From underneath last time, now the beauty from on top. Such a pretty leaf !!!

Sorry for your loss. I didn't think it could be colder in Rome than in Orléans. We also had a couple of hours of snow that rapidly melted, but no temperatures that low so far. I think the minimum must have been -4°C since the beginning of winter...

24th April 2021 and I thought I would update my Esk Sunset here today as there has been conversations on the forum about this recently.
It's only just starting to unfurl a few buds.
