Took these photos a few minutes ago whilst out walking and thought I would post to ID the lichen. When the leaves drop there is still so much interest in trees that is often overlooked. The 'lichens'. As can be seen the lichen has made it's way to the top of this Acer platanoides tree.
The shared specific visual feature particular to deciduous trees and shrubs is the pattern made by their exposed branches when these are leafless.
Looks like several kinds of lichen there. The largest foliose one: Does it have short black hairs on the margins?
@Frog good afternoon J, went and took more photos of the lichen and I can confirm no black hairs. I took another close up.
Thank you for checking - the soredia balls on the margins had me wondering. I think this is also Flavoparmelia ... again not one I know well as not really in my region. I see no rhizines near the margin undersides, which makes Flavopunctelia also possible.... so for a better ID might be good to see if there are abundant rhizines underneath the centre. Clearly I need to get to know Flavoparmelia better....
@Frog Thank-you for the reply J, there were no rhizines so your choice of Flavopunctlia looks a very good ID and especially now having read about it on Wikipedia.
